captures of the pirates
When the pirates told Caesar the ransom
would be $30,000 he was filled with scorn and told them he was
worth at least $70,000 - the pirates agreed and raised the
ransom for Julius Caesar. While his friends tried to gather the
funds, Caesar spent forty days with his captives. During this
entire time Julius Caesar liked to joke that he would
someday capture them all and crucify them, a joke that always
got lots of uproarious laughter in response. Since Julius
Caesar was often reciting poetry to them, or practicing his
oration, they assumed it was one of his playful games. But when
the ransom was paid and Julius Caesar was set free, the first
thing he did was organize a fleet and chase after the pirates
who kidnapped him. Julius Caesar captured the pirates and
kept his word - they were crucified, to the last man.
