Q&A: The Life of Julius Caesar

Question: Who Was Julius Caesar?

Answer: Julius Caesar was one of the greatest ever rulers of Rome.

He started off as an underachiever but eventually made an impressive political and Military career, becoming the First “Caesar,” long known as the greatest ruler and conqueror in the Roman Empire.

There were many stories and plays written about Julius Caesar such as the not-so-accurate tale by William Shakespeare. Eventually, Julius Caesar met with a tragic death as he was assassinated in public.

Question: When was Julius Caesar born?

Answer: Julius Caesar was born on either July 12th or 13th, probably in the year 100 B.C.

The actual date and time when Julius Caesar was born have been debated. Some historians put when Julius Caesar was born a little earlier than 100 BC, in the year 102 BC.

It is in fact a fascinating debate because Julius Caesar himself was the originator of the calendar we use today… The Caesarean calendar. So naturally it is difficult to accurately place someone’s birthday who had yet to invent the calendar!

Question: What was Julius Caesar’s full name?

Answer: The full name of Julius Caesar was Gaius Julius Caesar. Gaius Julius Caesar was also the name of Julius Caesar’s father and his grandfather aw well. Family names often started as nicknames and it is said that Caesar simply meant “hairy.”

Considering that the word Caesar would go on to mean Emperor in many different languages (even becoming the word ‘Czar’ in Russian) this is a very lowly and humorous origin for such a powerful word.

Question: Where was Julius Caesar born?

Answer: There are a few legends of when and where Julius Caesar was born. Some believed that Julius Caesar was descended from the gods and was pulled forth from an incision in his mother’s body. This gave rise to the modern term for surgical births called the Caesarean section.
