what did they have to do with Rome???
Answer: Antony and Cleopatra were married in 33. The marriage was illegal under Roman law, but that was no longer relevant: he had severed once and for all his ties with Rome. In an age where few people could read and write, fairly complex ideas could be compressed into simple symbols whose meaning would be clear to everyone. She was Isis, he adopted the guise of Dionysus and their heads appeared together on the coins of both empires. He would acquire land not for Rome but for the revived empire of Alexander the Great.
In the Donation of Alexandria, Antony proclaimed Cleopatra as Queen of Egypt, Cyprus, Libya and Syria. Caesarion, Julius Caesar’s son, was her consort. To the Egyptians this was simply following Ptolemaic tradition: Cleopatra had no surviving brothers so she would share the throne with her son. To everyone else, however, this seemed very much like an attempt to bypass Octavian and have Caesarion take over his father’s empire. The remainder of the eastern portion of the Roman empire was divided among the three children of Antony and Cleopatra. Some of the land so divided had not yet been conquered and the rest of it already had client kings in place so this was a theoretical not a real transfer of power.
No mention was made of Antony’s role in all of this, but no one inside or out of Rome could have had the shadow of a doubt: all the land east of the Adriatic had been severed from the Roman empire, restored to Alexander the Great’s Empire and was Antony’s to dispose of as he saw fit. It was a challenge that Octavian could not ignore: it was to be a fight to the finish with the winner taking it all---compromise would be impossible.
The end was an anticlimax. The two sides met at Actium on the northwest coast of Greece and Octavian was the clear winner, though mopping up operations meant another year before Octavian arrived to claim Alexandria. Cleopatra and Anthony ended it all by committing suicide.

Question: Is there a full length biography of FDR that isn't an "Auto-hagiography?"?

Many books going back to the days of FDR's presidency("The Roosevelt Myth","The People's Pottage") have revealed a man at complete odds with his public image. Others have been published on his mismanagement of the depression ("FDR's Folly"), his shocking lack of concern for the constitution and international law and his complete misreading of Stalin ("R&S:A Failed Courtship"), as well as his egomaniacal running for a fourth term when terminal ill, still less his forknowledge of Pearl Harbor("Infamy"). Is there a single biography that takes all this on? Most all that I've seen are embarrassingly partisan and make don't even make an pretense at objectivity. The man's been dead 50 years, let's hear the unvarnished truth!
Answer: I understand what you mean. I'd highly recommend "FDR" by Jean Edward Smith. It's exceptionally well researched and evenhanded. Unlike other biographers, Smith has no axe to grind, and in previous biographies has demonstrated a wonderful capacity for both scholarship and readability.

Question: Which are the Beethoven Influences in Johannes Brahms Symphonies?

I want instances where he wrote music that had a family relationship with Beethoven.

Answer: There's no question that Beethoven colossus that he was had a profound effect on Brahms.
He reportedly wrote;
"I'll never get a symphony written. You've no conception of what it's like to hear a giant's footsteps marching behind you."
Brahms didn't manage to complete his first symphony until he was 43..21 years in the making.
In his four symphonies there is a strong influence,even homage apparent.
Probably no more so than in his first symphony which was sometimes jokingly referred to as "Beethoven's Tenth".
From my understanding there is a theme in the finale of Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 1 in C minor that is related to the "Ode to Joy" theme from the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth symphony. Supposedly this was pointed out to Brahms to which he reputedly retorted: "Any ass can see that!"
Indeed, gestures of homage to Beethoven, particularly the Fifth Symphony, are present throughout the work. The key is C minor, giving way to C major in the final movement, following the same tonal plan as Beethoven used in the Fifth
However these similarities though do not make Brahms symphonies rip-offs,they have their own very distinct Brahmsian character.

Question: Can you recommend a good biography of Obama?

Now that he has been in office a year, I would suspect that there would be a good crop of biographies. I'm looking for an objective book, in the vein of "First in His Class" on Clinton and "First Son" on Bush. Objectivity is my first requirement, and if it is engaging and reveals illuminating information, that is certainly a bonus.
Thank you for the suggestion, but I am not looking for an autobiography, but something more objective.

Answer: There's a good book I think it's called '21 days in hell' that might suffice as a good biography.

Answer: You can buy sets of let's say, his symphonies, his Hungarian dances, for piano and violin, mostly by style of piece.
here's a list of works for you. I can't seem to find all his pieces together though. Maybe you can figure out which you want and see if there are a minimum of 2 cds so you won't be spending huge amounts of money.
