Question: Did Julius Caesar lose any large battles in Gaul?

Answer: The Gaulish chieftain Vercingetorix, who had united the tribes against the Romans, forced Caesar into battle at Gergovia. Caesar laid siege to the town, but this was one of the few times he was outmaneuvered. While the Gauls suffered casualties (dead and wounded) of just a few hundred, the Romans were left with other 700 dead and over 6000 wounded.

The battle helped the Gaulish cause for a short while, but Caesar soon defeated Vercingetorix at Alesia, and Gaul was conquered by the Romans.

In the Asterix comics, many Gauls make their claim for loyalty and bravery by claiming "I fought at Gergovia!" However, in Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield, they hold such shame for the defeat at Alesia, that they claim that no one even knows where Alesia is.

Question: Julius Caesar and Brutus character essay.?

My english2 final is over analysis on Shakespear's Julius Caesar tragedy. I'm doing basically a compare and contrast of Caesar and Brutus.
It has the be the formal 5 paragraphs.. Here's my outline:

1. Introduction
*2-4 : characteristics*
2. Loyalty
3. ?
4. Flaws that led to their downfall
5. Conclusion

So, what I need help on is obviously my third paragraph. I'm blank on what to write about. I'm not the best essays, but I really want to do good on my final.
If you can think of anything, please comment.

Answer: if you were comparing anyone it should be Brutus and Cassius, there the exact opposite. Cassius is manipulative and persuasive, Brutus is gullible and naive.

i have to do something like this too for my final due tomorrow.

I've been reading Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and I need help figuring out who the main characters are. I know Brutus is one of them but I'm not sure if there are more?

Question: Any shakespearean people out there? Particular ones that are good with essays?

I need to write and essay following this prompt..

Act 1 is the exposition of the play and as such, it establishes setting, creates character, and introduces conflicts. motifs and symbols also begin to ermge. how does shakespeare "grab" the attention of the audience? choose any of these tops (or anything else you find compelling in act 1) and write a 1-2 page response. although all writing must have a thesis, this is NOT a 5 pt paragraph (thought good writing contains all of those parts)- write freely, but organize logically.

This prompt is for Julius Caesar. Does anyone have the free time/heart to write a 1-2 page essay?

Answer: Well, I'm not going to do the work for you, but all you need to do is pay attention to the words used. Look for imagery and take notice of the characters actions and thinking. He liked to do things like that, for example, as they didn't have the lighting to do plays at night, he had to use the characters actions and words to bring it into the watcher's mind that it was night-time. 2. As for your 2nd passage, He's just asking everyone in the audience to listen. He saying he hasn't come to say a whole bunch of nice things about caesar, he's come to bury him. like he's just there speaking at his funeral. Then he goes on to say that basically people only remember the bad things a person has done after they are dead, and all of the good things are buried with them.

So when Julius Caesar was conquering the known world he went to England for a short period of time. Did people find Roman coins in England from his expedition (or with his face on it) and if so then where in England?
And was Julius Caesars daughter named Julia or was Julia his aunt? In the movie Caesar Julia is his daughter.

Answer: Actually Caesar never managed to gain a foothold in England, later emperors did that. Any Roman coins found would probably be located south of the Hadrian's wall and would be from the later, imperial era.
He had a daughter named Julia Caesaris.

Question: JULIUS CAESAR - Brutus's soliliquoy?

I'm supposed to paraphrase Brutus's soliliquoy in Act II Scene I of Julius Caesar. It starts at the bottom of pg 18 with "It must be by his death.." and ends with "And kill him in the shell"
but I really don't get what hes saying! Can anyone help me out?

Answer: Brutus says that he doesn't have any personal reason to rise against Caesar but for the general good of rome. The question is how power could change his nature . It's the bright day on which the snake becomes dangerous and needs careful walking. similarly,if we crown Caesar, then we are giving him power, which he may use against us. Greatness is abused when pity is separated from power but i don't know when Caesar's actions were not guided by reasons. But it's a common thing that humbleness is an ambitious person's ladder : the climber looks up at the ladder while climbing it but, once he reaches the top of the ladder, he turns his back on it ,looks up to the clouds,forgetting the path through which he came through . So,Caesar may do the same thing which we may be able to prevent . Since our present action (of rising against Caesar) will not be according to Caesars present condition ,but, based on the extremes of tyranny into which he would run into if he is given power , therefore ,he should be considered as a serpent's egg which when hatched , would become dangerous,and should be killed in it's shell

Question: Conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar (Penguin Classics Edition) Help!!!?

I have to read this book for school and I've already read half of it. I've always been a good student, but the problem is that I really don't understand what I'm reading. I have to write a 3-5 page paper within the next few weeks and answer a list of really complicated and specific questions. I looked up to see if there was a sparknotes or an online summary/study guide, but I can't find what I'm looking for. The list is so long and confusing that I couldn't even type it out here. Please Help!!!

Itis a description of Julius Caesar's wars against the Gauls, probably compiled from the (self-serving) reports he sent back to the Senate in Rome. Otherwise, I don't know how to help you further, except to suggest that you google for a map of ancient Gaul with the tribal names and place names to see where the campaigns were taking places. Answer: well, really you should read the material and do your own homework. Julius himself does not commit suicide, search the book, i think a woman speaks of it, maybe even does it. As for your "power of word" part check out the funeral speech's and how people react afterwords, maybe that's it.
It's been over 15 years since I read it so not really sure any more.

Question: Why was Marc Antony's funeral speech more effective than Brutus' speech in the play 'Julius Caesar'?

And why is this of crucial importance in the play?

Answer: It's crucially important because Brutus had calmed the crowd and convinced them that Caesar needed to die for their own good (the good of Rome). Antony steps up, tells the crowd he comes to bury Caesar, not to praise him, then praises him. He says he wishes he was a good orator (like Brutus), then wows them. He tells them he hopes they will not riot, and then convinces them that Brutus and Cassius were traitorous murderers and they rip the town apart, forcing Brutus and Cassius to flee.

Looking at the two speeches, the most obvious difference is that Brutus speaks in prose, while Antony speaks in verse, traditionally a more powerful format. Brutus is a great orator and uses rhetoric to great advantage. One example is his use of Antithesis: "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more. "

But look at how he starts, "Romans, countrymen,and lovers, hear me for my cause, and be silent, that you may hear." Not exactly a boffo beginning.

Now listen to Antony start, like he was pounding a gavel!
"Friends,Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;"
BAM! BAM BAM! BAM BAM BAM! and then a simple instruction.

Antony continues brilliantly. Listen again for his irony in the use of the words "honorable" and "ambitious". His use of rhetorical devices here is unsurpassed. Now go explore the speeches again for yourself.

Question: Simplified versions of the classics eg - odyssey - iliad - shakespeare - julius caesar etc?

Can someone recommend editions of classic literature which retains the quality of the original but is easier to read for someone whose English vocabulary is not very wide? perhaps a good not oversimplified childrens' version?

Answer: I would suggest that instead you buy a study guide to go with the classics. If you buy a re written version then you Will lose the beauty of the language. Believe me, even people with large vocabularies find all the writers and pieces you a have listed challenging! Coles study guides are good, but I think they might be out of print. But any decent study guide should be alright.

Try to go and see a production of the Shakespeare play that you are studying. Only this will truly bring the story alive for you.

Answer: Do you know what Brutus is doing during his talk? I do not know but as a former drama instructor I can tell you this:
If he is talking to a group, do the same, use your audience as the senate or whatever. Look into their eyes one after the other and use hand gestures to emphasize your points. Do not "act out" with your hands but do as a normal person would. ("act out" means you do not flap your arms if you talk about flying and you do not hold your hands to your heart if you talk about love.)
If he is talking to an individual, use a real person or a chair and do the same. Concentrate on the chair as if it was listening to you and you are trying to convince it with your argument. Walk around it, put your hand on it's shoulders if the content of the talk seems to indicate it.
If this is the talk with the skull and you have no skull, then choose something strange like a GI Joe doll. If you maintain your composure and you stay in character, the doll indicates that you can act in any circumstance.
