Question: helphelphelp!!!! history!!!!!?

I was told to watch some video, but the video isnt helpful at all.
can someone explain the following to me?
1. Explain how America shifted from a liberal majority, to a conservative majority.
2. Discuss the presidencies of Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, analyzing the world events and cultural changes that defined their eras in office.
3. Analyze the contributions of individuals like Henry Kissinger, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Margaret Thatcher.

Answer: I go to PALCS as well. Just read the text book pages 1096-1100 and just read. The video didn't really help me much either, but you can pick some information from there. Mr. L doesn't ask for huge responses, so just write a few sentences.

Question: How and why does the Henry Ford Museum have Lincoln's assassination chair?

I live right by the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn MI and I have always wondered how we received Abraham Lincoln's assassination chair (the chair he was sitting in when she was killed). Does anyone know how the museum inherited this chair. Also, is this the 100% actual chair that he was killed in? Thanks in advance!

Question: places to visit and things to do in Michigan during the long weekend?

been here for 9 years and covered pretty much everything, any sugggestions beyond the following the list of stuff that we have already done:
henry ford museum, holland, tahquamenon falls, sue sault marie, mackinac island, putin bay para sailing, ann arbor summer festival, detroit river front.

outdoor activity suggestions are also good.

Answer: I love spending the 4th in Saugatuck. Quaint shops in a village which is non-commercial with many art galleries as well. Douglas is just 5 min away and it has even more galleries plus, if you like to go antiquing, they have one heck of a large antique store. Saugatuck holds an art fair on the 4th; don't know about Sunday though.

Grand Rapids (45 min from Saugatuck) has the Gerald Ford museum plus the Fred Meijer Gardens which is so much more than gardens with many, many sculptures. It has a great inexpensive restaurant with many glass sculptures on the ceiling by Chilhuly. There is also an enormous Chilhuly sculpture in the large hall. I was amazed to read that the Gardens are on the list of the top 10 sites which people must see before they die. Grand Rapids also has a very nice zoo and our downtown, which is beautiful, is very lively at night. We also have the VanAndel Arena - you can find out who is performing and get tickets in advance.

PS: If you haven't been to Traverse City please go. I'm going with a friend in October for a festival plus we'll be enjoying the 3 hr drive there to see the fall foliage. The drive alone is worth it; it's easy to feel as though you're driving in a never-ending forest - it's incredibly beautiful.

Question: Can entire membership to Henry Ford/Greenfield Village in Mi. be deducted from inc. on taxes and if so where?

Answer: The Henry Ford is a valid 501(c)(3) organization, and their website states that memberships are indeed tax-deductible. You can include your membership in your charitable contributions as an itemized deduction on Schedule A.

Ah; Judy caught me sleeping at the late tax-season wheel. As the updated first link below specifies, memberships are deductible "to the extent allowed by law." Having re-read the question, the words "ENTIRE membership" now jump out at me in bright, neon lights.

My updated answer is: maybe. As Judy said, you can only deduct any amount that you give above the value of any benefits you receive. HOWEVER: If you are at an annual membership level of $75 or less, the full amount may be deductible. The second link below shows that IRS allows certain benefits to be ignored, and most of the member benefits listed on the first link appear to qualify.

If your annual membership is more than $75, the organization is required to give you a written statement regarding how much is deductible. I assume you haven't received one since you are asking here, so I would highly recommend calling the Henry Ford Call Center at 313-982-6001; I guarantee that you are not the first person to ask about this, so they should be able to confirm how much of your specific membership level is deductible. Good luck!

After three years of working his double shifts in Detroit, Henry Ford completed his apprenticeship and returned to the farm to help his father for a while.

Ford's first exposure to machines that operated by its own power instead of horses was actually with a steam engine. He discovered one of his father's neighbors had purchased a steam engine but couldn't find anyone who knew how to drive it. Henry Ford dashed over and volunteered for the job, of course.

Shortly after, the manufacturer of the engine itself heard about Henry's skill in driving and repairing the machine, and he hired Henry Ford to sell and repair steam engines throughout southern Michigan. Henry  was also sent to Detroit occasionally to repair other machines.

Henry Ford and Internal Combustion, horseless carriage

On one of his trips into Detroit at that time, Henry Ford was introduced to an internal combustion engine. It was love at first sight. Immediately, Henry saw the possibilities. This engine relied on gasoline instead of coal or steam, and it was smaller and lighter than a steam engine.

Henry set to work to find out all he could about the engine. He learned to repair it, to take it apart, even to build a new one. All along, the question on his mind was whether this engine could someday be the key to his dream of building a horseless carriage. Finally, Henry Ford decided to build his own internal combustion engine, and try it out.

It took him several years to build his first fully working 1-Cylinder engine, which arrived just days after the birth of his only son, Edsel.

Once young Henry Ford even hammered his mother's knitting needles into screwdrivers. Henry Ford was brilliant. His brilliance was natural and unlearned. His formal education amounted to about eight years in a one-room schoolhouse and his grades were mediocre at best. Throughout most of the young and adult life of Henry Ford, he had only one single interest - machines.

When Henry Ford was twelve years old, his father took him on an errand to Detroit and on the way they saw a steam road-engine barreling down a country lane. It was a memorable moment for Henry Ford.

It was the first time young Henry Ford had ever seen a machine that operated by its own power instead of horses. The road-engine had a huge boiler into which the operator shoveled coal, thus building steam to turn the wheels. From that moment on, Henry Ford dreamed of building a smaller self-powered machine, one that could be driven by anyone and that could move faster than anything drawn by a horse. That dream was still on his mind when Henry Ford finished his schooling.

The teen years of Henry Ford

After he finished school, when he was only sixteen years old, Henry Ford left the farm and found work as an apprentice machinist in Detroit. He made $2.50 a week - not enough to pay his expenses.

So Ford took an additional night job repairing watches in a jeweler's shop, where he earned an additional fifty cents a night. The jeweler had him work in back of the shop because he felt his customers might not feel confident seeing a sixteen year old kid working on their watches, even though Henry Ford's work was that of an expert craftsman.

I know a little about the assembly line but not much. Could you elaborate on it more and add a little more information please?

Answer: The reason that Henry was so successful was because his goal was to put the world on wheels. To do this, he offered the famous "$5 a day" wages, and brought tons of people to Detroit, which basically created the middle class. The cars were also pretty affordable for how extravagant they seemed, and Henry took criticism for this. He could have theoretically made soooo much more money if he charged more for his cars and paid his workers less.

The assembly line was designed to help speed production of the cars. If one man assembled one car by himself, he had to know how to put everything together and had to go around to different parts of the factory to get the necessary parts. By creating the assembly lines, certain workers specialized in certain areas where they became efficient at their jobs since the parts were right there and the repetition made it easy.

Question: Moving to Detroit to work at Henry Ford Hospital. Any ideas on where to live?

I would prefer a short commute around 20 minutes and nothing too suburban (no kids).

Answer: Which one? There are different branches. I'd say your best bet would be Royal Oak. It's close enough to most of them and is a nice area with a lot of younger (20-30 yrs old) people. It can be on the more expensive side in some areas. But it has a great night life and tons of stuff to do during the day too.
