Answer: An Egyptian Mameluke army under Sultan Qutuz defeated a Mongol army under Kitboga (rather than Genghis Khan, who died some years earlier) at the battle of Ain Jalut in Israel in September 1260.

This was by no means the first Mongol defeat; they had suffered several reverses against the Bulgars long before Ain Jalut.
