/>

Answer: The Gaulish chieftain Vercingetorix, who had united the tribes against the Romans, forced Caesar into battle at Gergovia. Caesar laid siege to the town, but this was one of the few times he was outmaneuvered. While the Gauls suffered casualties (dead and wounded) of just a few hundred, the Romans were left with other 700 dead and over 6000 wounded.

The battle helped the Gaulish cause for a short while, but Caesar soon defeated Vercingetorix at Alesia, and Gaul was conquered by the Romans.

In the Asterix comics, many Gauls make their claim for loyalty and bravery by claiming "I fought at Gergovia!" However, in Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield, they hold such shame for the defeat at Alesia, that they claim that no one even knows where Alesia is.

02 - Gaul's Ambush (Carlo Siliotto) - Julius Caesar

When you paraphrase a passage, you express its ideas in your own words.

Read the numbered passages below in their contexts before you paraphrase each.

1. Antony. That I did love thee, Caesar, O, 'tis tue!
If then thy spirit look upon us now,
Shall it not grieve thee dearer than thy death
To see thy Antony making his peace,
Shaking the bloody fingers of thy foes,
Most noble, in the presence of thy corse?

2. Antony. Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones;

I need you to paraphrase (make these into your own words and thoughts). Best answer gets well, the best answer.

Answer: 1. for your 1st passage. the modern text is at this link

http://nfs.sparknotes.com/juliuscaesar/page_116.html

It shows the original text next to a modern traslation, so it makes it easier to understand.
But you should really paraphrase it on your own. Its not too hard to figure out

2. As for your 2nd passage, He's just asking everyone in the audience to listen. He saying he hasn't come to say a whole bunch of nice things about caesar, he's come to bury him. like he's just there speaking at his funeral. Then he goes on to say that basically people only remember the bad things a person has done after they are dead, and all of the good things are buried with them.

the modern text for that is at this link

http://nfs.sparknotes.com/juliuscaesar/page_132.html

The assassinationof Cpt.Caesar<br

Julius Caesar is a highly ambitious political leader in Rome and his aim is to become dictator. Caesar is warned that he must "beware the Ides of March" . The prophecy comes true and Caesar is assassinated due to the plotting of Marcus Brutus and Cassius. The friend of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, provides the famous funeral oration ("Friends, Romans, and countrymen…") Brutus and Cassius meet their inevitable defeat which plunges the country into civil war.

Young Turks Episode 9/28/09

Can somebody please give me a brief summary of what has happened in the play, from the beginning up until Brutus' speech in Act 3 (three) Scene 2 (two).

I need to know the basic plot and storyline, who the characters are, what each character is doing, and basically what has happened etc.

If anybody can provide any help at all i would very much appreciate it.

Thanks very very much,
Ethan

Answer: Here you are

[edit] Synopsis
Marcus Brutus is Caesar's close friend; his ancestors were famed for driving the tyrannical King Tarquin from Rome (described in Shakespeare's earlier The Rape of Lucrece). Brutus allows himself to be cajoled into joining a group of conspiring senators because of a growing suspicion—implanted by Gaius Cassius—that Caesar intends to turn republican Rome into a monarchy under his own rule. Traditional readings of the play maintain that Cassius and the other conspirators are motivated largely by envy and ambition, whereas Brutus is motivated by the demands of honour and patriotism; other commentators, such as Isaac Asimov, suggest that the text shows Brutus is no less moved by envy and flattery.[5] One of the central strengths of the play is that it resists categorising its characters as either simple heroes or villains.

The early scenes deal mainly with Brutus' arguments with Cassius and his struggle with his own conscience. The growing tide of public support soon turns Brutus against Caesar (This public support was actually faked. Cassius wrote letters to Brutus in different handwritings over the next month in order to get Brutus to join the conspiracy). A soothsayer warns Caesar to "beware the Ides of March," which he ignores, culminating in his assassination at the Capitol by the conspirators that day.

Caesar's assassination is perhaps the most famous part of the play, about halfway through. After ignoring the soothsayer as well as his wife's own premonitions, Caesar comes to the Senate. The conspirators create a superficial motive for the assassination by means of a petition brought by Metellus Cimber, pleading on behalf of his banished brother. As Caesar, predictably, rejects the petition, Casca grazes Caesar in the back of his neck, and the others follow in stabbing him; Brutus is last. At this point, Caesar utters the famous line "Et tu, Brute?" ("And you, Brutus?", i.e. "You too, Brutus?"). Shakespeare has him add, "Then fall, Caesar," suggesting that Caesar did not want to survive such treachery. The conspirators make clear that they did this act for Rome, not for their own purposes and do not attempt to flee the scene but act victorious.

After Caesar's death, however, Mark Antony, with a subtle and eloquent speech over Caesar's corpse—the much-quoted Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears...—deftly turns public opinion against the assassins by manipulating the emotions of the common people, in contrast to the rational tone of Brutus's speech. Antony rouses the mob to drive the conspirators from Rome. Amid the violence, the innocent poet, Cinna, is confused with the conspirator Cinna and is murdered by the mob.

The beginning of Act Four is marked by the quarrel scene, where Brutus attacks Cassius for soiling the noble act of regicide by accepting bribes ("Did not great Julius bleed for justice' sake? / What villain touch'd his body, that did stab, / And not for justice?", IV.iii,19-21). The two are reconciled, but as they prepare for war with Mark Antony and Caesar's adopted son, Octavian (Shakespeare's spelling: Octavius), Caesar's ghost appears to Brutus with a warning of defeat ("thou shalt see me at Philippi", IV.iii,283). Events go badly for the conspirators during the battle; both Brutus and Cassius choose to commit suicide rather than to be captured. The play ends with a tribute to Brutus by Antony, who has remained "the noblest Roman of them all" (V.v,68) and hints at the friction between Mark Antony and Octavius which will characterise another of Shakespeare's Roman plays

Julius Caesar Act 2, Scene 1

I'm supposed to paraphrase Brutus's soliliquoy in Act II Scene I of Julius Caesar. It starts at the bottom of pg 18 with "It must be by his death.." and ends with "And kill him in the shell"
but I really don't get what hes saying! Can anyone help me out?

Answer: Brutus says that he doesn't have any personal reason to rise against Caesar but for the general good of rome. The question is how power could change his nature . It's the bright day on which the snake becomes dangerous and needs careful walking. similarly,if we crown Caesar, then we are giving him power, which he may use against us. Greatness is abused when pity is separated from power but i don't know when Caesar's actions were not guided by reasons. But it's a common thing that humbleness is an ambitious person's ladder : the climber looks up at the ladder while climbing it but, once he reaches the top of the ladder, he turns his back on it ,looks up to the clouds, forgetting the path through which he came through . So,Caesar may do the same thing which we may be able to prevent . Since our present action (of rising against Caesar) will not be according to Caesars present condition ,but, based on the extremes of tyranny into which he would run into if he is given power , therefore ,he should be considered as a serpent's egg which when hatched , would become dangerous, and should be killed in it's shell

hope this helps
I have to read this book for school and I've already read half of it. I've always been a good student, but the problem is that I really don't understand what I'm reading. I have to write a 3-5 page paper within the next few weeks and answer a list of really complicated and specific questions. I looked up to see if there was a sparknotes or an online summary/study guide, but I can't find what I'm looking for. The list is so long and confusing that I couldn't even type it out here. Please Help!!!

Answer: At least you are reading it in English. I had to read it in Latin! Itis a description of Julius Caesar's wars against the Gauls, probably compiled from the (self-serving) reports he sent back to the Senate in Rome. Otherwise, I don't know how to help you further, except to suggest that you google for a map of ancient Gaul with the tribal names and place names to see where the campaigns were taking places. Also google those names for more information.

Climate change puts the heat on Darwin's Chillingham cattle

The blast furnaces that powered the Industrial Revolution had only just begun belching clouds of carbon into the sky when, in 1860, Charles Darwin encouraged a Victorian nobleman to maintain accurate data on an intriguing herd of cattle living feral in the grounds of his medieval castle.

And why is this of crucial importance in the play?

Answer: It's crucially important because Brutus had calmed the crowd and convinced them that Caesar needed to die for their own good (the good of Rome). Antony steps up, tells the crowd he comes to bury Caesar, not to praise him, then praises him. He says he wishes he was a good orator (like Brutus), then wows them. He tells them he hopes they will not riot, and then convinces them that Brutus and Cassius were traitorous murderers and they rip the town apart, forcing Brutus and Cassius to flee.

Looking at the two speeches, the most obvious difference is that Brutus speaks in prose, while Antony speaks in verse, traditionally a more powerful format. Brutus is a great orator and uses rhetoric to great advantage. One example is his use of Antithesis: "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more. "

But look at how he starts, "Romans, countrymen, and lovers, hear me for my cause, and be silent, that you may hear." Not exactly a boffo beginning.

Now listen to Antony start, like he was pounding a gavel!
"Friends,Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;"
BAM! BAM BAM! BAM BAM BAM! and then a simple instruction.

Antony continues brilliantly. Listen again for his irony in the use of the words "honorable" and "ambitious". His use of rhetorical devices here is unsurpassed. Now go explore the speeches again for yourself.

Class activities in Taunton schools observe Foreign Language Week

For one week each year, foreign languages take center stage at Taunton High School, as the students celebrate National Foreign Language Week.

Marc Antony's speech on Julius Caesar's Funeral (AMULAC)

Hi
I'm have to do a dramatic recitation on Julius Caesar this Tuesday and it's the 27 lines that Brutus speaks here http://nfs.sparknotes.com/juliuscaesar/page_58.html However I'm am suppose to act as well. So I need advice as to movements, emphasis, props etc to use and when.

Thanks

Andrew

Answer: Do you know what Brutus is doing during his talk? I do not know but as a former drama instructor I can tell you this:
If he is talking to a group, do the same, use your audience as the senate or whatever. Look into their eyes one after the other and use hand gestures to emphasize your points. Do not "act out" with your hands but do as a normal person would. ("act out" means you do not flap your arms if you talk about flying and you do not hold your hands to your heart if you talk about love.)
If he is talking to an individual, use a real person or a chair and do the same. Concentrate on the chair as if it was listening to you and you are trying to convince it with your argument. Walk around it, put your hand on it's shoulders if the content of the talk seems to indicate it.
If this is the talk with the skull and you have no skull, then choose something strange like a GI Joe doll. If you maintain your composure and you stay in character, the doll indicates that you can act in any circumstance.

<a
