Julius Caesar Culture

Julius Caesar Culture

Question: How many facts are there in the story of Asterix?

I know that Vercingetorix and Julius Caesar are real historical characters. And the conquer of Gaul by the Romans is also true.

But, I'm curious about the culture that is shown in the comic:

Did ancient gaulish people dress like in the comic?

Did they wear helmets with horns or wings on it?

Was a chief of a village always carried around on top of a shield?

Answer: Yes
Yes
and, yes.

Gauls wore brightly coloured and often intricately patterned trousers and cloaks, each warrior often having an individual pattern specially made for his clothing.

There are many examples of Gallic and Celtic helmets with wings and horns.A famous one, dating from the 1st century AD, was found in the river Thames in London in the 1980s.

The Gauls were a warrior society, the chief gaining his position through feats of arms. All the other warriors were thus subservient to him, and on important occasions they would bear him on a shield, physically raising him above the other warriors as a metaphor for his higher position in the warrior society.
Shieldbearer was a position of great honour in Celtic society, only the best and strongest warriors were considered for this task.
