Question: Does anyone know a free download ebook or free printable on Martin Luther King?

I have Martin Luther King stuff – but none of it “really cool” – we can watch the speech videos, read biographies off the internet, looked at maps, talked about Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges – but I was wondering if there were any interesting kids books out there on Martin Luther King – or fiction books on his time that aren’t too graphic – and if there’s free ebooks or printable books that’s even better! Anything for an 8 year old girl that likes to listen to chapter books like Nancy Drew, Babysitter Club, Animal Ark, Magic Tree House, Box Car Kids, etc? She didn’t take much to the Dear America diary series. Maybe a book on a kids eye view of the times?

Question: Abe Lincoln’s life in a bag?

So in Social Studies we have a choice of doing a book review on the biography we had to read (just a normal book report) or what’s called a Book In the Bag.. where we have to choose 10 facts from that person’s life and turn them into items representing that fact.. I had Abraham Lincoln and since he freed the slaves i would do. say play handcuffs or that he was the 16th president i would do birthday cake number 16.. Well I need 10 facts along with items and that would go good.. I am in 7th grade so nothing too detailed.. but I am in honored 7th grade classes so it is kind of like 8th grade.. but anyway if you give a fact like i said he freed the slaves can you give a year because i can’t just say.. “he freed the slaves” when presenting.. everyone knows that.. just help! please no negative comments

Answer: I don’t know if you’re asking for facts or something to symbolize the facts. I had a couple of artifact ideas but they’re not practical. So, I’ll just list a few pertinent facts about Lincoln.
You already know he’s the 16th President
You know about freeing the slaves. The 13th amendment was what did that, in 1865.
So,
He was a Lawyer, the name of his law firm was Stuart and Lincoln. It was in Springfield.
He took two flatboat trips to New Orleans. One from Indiana, down the Ohio River to the Mississippi, working for a man named Gentry. The other was down the Sangamon River to the Illinois River, then the Mississippi to New Orleans. This is the trip where he first saw New Salem.
He was a captain of a militia company from New Salem in the Black Hawk war. They didn’t fight any Indians.
He was the Postmaster of New Salem.
He ran two different stores. The first for Mr. Offutt, the second he ran with a friend named Berry. The second store went bankrupt.
He served in the Illinois General Assembly as one of the Whig party leaders. He was instrumental in getting the state capital moved from Vandalia to Springfield.
He served one term in Congress.
He was the father of four boys: Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas. In his farewell address in Springfield (February 11, 1861) the boy he refers to who was buried was Edward.
His grandfather knew Daniel Boone.
He was married to Mary Todd Lincoln November 4, 1842.

Pepper is the third most used recipe ingredient in the world. Third only to salt and water. Americans eat approximately .25 pound of pepper a year. But where did pepper originate? Pepper originated in Kerala, India. The region is known for its twin monsoon. The heavy rains are important for the fragile fruits of the peppercorn plant. Other regions in the world grow pepper but Kerala reigns supreme in its quality and dominates the high end of the market. Pepper an essential in Indian food also had early medicinal value. Valued as a digestive stimulus and expectorant. Used externally to relieve skin afflictions and hives.

In classical Rome pepper was an article of commerce. After the decline of the Roman Empire Europeans still cherished pepper. The monetary allure of pepper brought the Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama and his crew to Calicut, India in 1498. This was the first direct sea voyage from Europe to Asia. Shortly, there after other European trading companies followed.

The spice trade and exploration was competitive. The Spaniards wanted to acquire peppercorns and other exotic spices. They sent Christopher Columbus to find a route to the Indies via the west. Instead of finding a route to India Christopher Columbus founded the Americas. Trying to convince his financial supporters that he had succeeded, he named the natives of the new world, Indians and their chiles “red” pepper. Christopher Columbus was not able to bring any peppercorn back to Spain but did discover a New World and his newly names red pepper. To this day there is an confusion about these two spices.

History has shown that the peppercorn has been used as a condiment and currency. In Europe pepper was used mainly for food. In the middle ages Europe meat was heavily salted with pepper for preservation and to kill the stench of decay. Pepper was expensive and was used in lieu of money for rent, dowry and taxes. Then pepper was referred to as, “peppercorn rent”. Because there was not enough pepper it became associated with gold. Today, poor families in Asia save pepper as a commodity. Pepper did not become affordable to the common man until the 19th century. Prior to that time only the rich could afford pepper. We never consider that the fruits of the peppercorn and other spices were a factor in shaping world history. Pepper was not only a spice but centuries ago a commodity so valuable that it was called, “Black Gold”.

Applebee’s CopyCat Honey Black Sauce for Salmon

Ingredients:
3/4 cup honey
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup pineapple juice
1 lemon, juiced
2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
4 (8 ounce) salmon fillets (without skin)

Directions:

Make the sauce by combining all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium/low heat. Stir occasionally until sauce begins to boil, then simmer uncovered for 15 minutes or until syrupy. Watch the sauce closely to be sure it doesn’t bubble over. Preheat barbecue grill to medium heat. Rub each salmon filet with vegetable oil, then add a light sprinkling of salt and pepper. Grill the salmon for 4 to 7 minutes per side or until done. Serve salmon with a small cup of the honey pepper sauce on the side.

Question: 5th grade teacher looking for suggestions for next years book picks. Any ideas?

I am looking for suggestions for books to read whole class. I used to teach 2nd grade so this is a bit of a change for me. Any genre is helpful (non-fiction, reality, biography, etc.). Thanks for your help!!

Answer: The “revisionist treatment” here as far as I am concern is an effort to put put a person back in the history of his true life.
For exemple some one may have the favor of the puplic of his time and anytime you mention his name ,all people can think is the good things that person does.it’s almost impossible to people to portrait him as a bad person.
The revisionist comes in to open the peoples eyes, to let them know that he has his bad side too and not everythig on him is positive.( It could be the other way around).

I have a 3-year-old daughter and I’m reading Lincoln’s biography little by little every night in bed.
She seems enjoying listening to the story.
I chose this one, because Lincoln’s was the first biography I read when I was a kid.
Whose biography would you or did you read to your kid first?
Why?

Answer: I tell my kids of my own experiences, they are amazed and can relate because it is more than a story. I do this so they are more appreciative of what they have. My children are 11, 8, and 16 months. I also asked my mother to right down a record of her life for them.

Question: What are a list of questions I can use to help format a seven page biography?

My social studies teacher assigned a 7 page essay on either a battle of the civil war or important people of the war. I am doing Abraham Lincoln. The problem is, he didn’t give me a list of things to look for. Is there any website, or do you have any ideas, of questions that I could answer to put in my biography? Such as:

How did Julius Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon help destroy the Roman Republic and create a dictatorship?

Answer: “There are many change models in existence today which could be used to examine the fall of the Roman Republic. Fullan (2001) has a model as does Beer, Eisenstat, and Spector (1990), and Hamel (2000). All of these are worthwhile. However, the author of this essay has decided to use the Kotter and Cohen (2002) model as it is presented in The Heart of Change. The eight steps in this model are easy to discern and then apply to a historical setting.
In addition, this analysis will focus on Julius Caesar as the leader seeking change. Although many individuals had a hand in the destruction of the Republic, history has long fingered Caesar as the man who destroyed it. Wrote Jimenez (2000) in acknowledging this point, “For all of his success on the battlefield and in politics, Caesar failed as a statesman because he had no vision of how Rome should function, except at his bidding, and allowed to govern it but himself. For the next five hundred years his successors would adhere to his example” (p. 241).
However, it can be argued that Caesar did have a vision. It was his intent to destroy the Republic and establish rule by one man. He was spectacularly successful in achieving his vision as a statesman. He did destroy the Republic and that was what he wanted. This paper will examine this motive as the “heart of change” that Caesar intended for the Roman Republic.”

Abraham Lincoln once said “How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg?”… Well, most people would answer “five”. In reality, just because you call its tail a leg, it doesn’t change the fact – the dog still has four legs. But because you assume it has five, you will think as if the dog has five legs. We make the same types of assumptions about everything else. Some of them are true, some (most) aren’t. And then we think, feel, talk and behave as if all of them would be true. These assumptions are called beliefs.

Here’s the most dangerous limiting belief that can ruin your love life after a bad break-up: “You can find true love only once in a lifetime.” The assumption of this belief is that the first time when you feel something deep and true for a man is the only time when you can have that feeling. This implies that what you felt for the first man you loved you will never feel again for any other man you’ll be with in the future. The further implications are heartbreaking because this means that you had one chance for true love and it’s gone, never to return. With such a deeply held belief, you can be more spiritual than Gandhi and still experience a very intense feeling of loss after a bad break-up.

This belief alone can literally ruin your life if you’ve been in love with a man and he broke-up with you at one point. But, fortunately, beliefs are not a reality, even though we feel as if they are. They’re just what We believe to be true. As long as you have this belief, you’ll go through a lot of unnecessary suffering and maybe even become disappointed with life in general.

If you don’t want to ruin your entire love life, then you must do one of these two things: let go of this limiting belief or, if you can’t do that, find a way around it.

Lincoln was the third city of the realm in prosperity and importance in Norman times. Fortunately this year the City Council have managed to find enough resources to keep the Tourist information Office near to the Castle open. Visitors can now find out about the attractions that Lincoln has to offer.

The Collection runs a series of exhibitions and themes across the year.

The Castle

Lincoln Castle was built on a site that was previously occupied by the Romans. Just after the battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror began building the castle in 1068.

The castle was used for 900 years as a court and prison with many people being executed on the ramparts.

Original features still remain and visitors get great views of the Cathedral, the city and the surrounding countryside from the wall walks.

Lincoln Castle is situated in the North centre of Lincoln. The nearest parking facilities can be found at The Lawn Visitor Centre offer the nearest parking with other places in Union Road, Lincoln and Westgate Carpark, Westgate.

The Museum of Life.

The largest and most diverse Community Museum in the County

Our rich and varied social history collection reflects and celebrates the culture of Lincolnshire and its people from 1750 to the present day. Exhibits illustrate commercial, domestic, agricultural, industrial and community life.

As the home to an authentic World War One tank named “Flirt” we also house the interactive galleries of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment, which have won prestigious national awards. Perhaps you can find information about family members who served here?

Close to the museum you can visit the working 18th century windmill, Ellis’s Mill, run entirely by the museum’s volunteer millers (weekends only).

The Museum is regularly described by its many visitors as “a Lincoln gem” and “Excellent value for money”.

We are pleased to offer a wide range of services including exhibitions in our community gallery, a vibrant special events programme, and education sessions linked to the National Curriculum. We also have a number of ‘loans boxes’ which can be hired by community organisations or schools and offer the chance to discover and handle object from the past.

The museum is fully accessible to wheelchairs users and has a tearoom, gift shop and free parking for cars and coaches.

The Cathedral

Looking at the West front of Lincoln’s fine Cathedral Church of St.Mary, past the pageant of ancient buildings outside the castle walls, the view of its historic soaring towers is awesome. This is the cathedral which John Ruskin called ” the most precious piece of architecture in the British isles” in this Ruskin was right, its sheer beauty is simply magical and its towers can be seen from all around the city.

The Norman cathedral was begun in 1072, and parts from this period can be seen at the west end of the building, where three elaborate portals are surmounted by an exquisite sculptured frieze from 1145. Mostly the cathedral is Gothic in style, and much of the church dates to after an earthquake of 1185. It has been little altered since this time.

The choir was rebuilt in 1192, this was followed by the rebuild of the western part of the church. The Angel choir, so called for its magnificent decoration and huge expanses of stained glass, was added between 1256-80. There-after only minor additions were made.

2. Rommel (desert wolf)
3. Khalid Ibn Al Walid
4. Julius Caesar
5. Napoleon
How about Genghis Khan or Saladin

Answer: 1) Napoleon ( If you fight too long, your enemies, learn your art of war)
2) Alexander the Great
3) Gangis Khan
4) Stone Wall Jackson (Gen. Lee said of Jackson when he was wounded, just before he died,) “Jackson has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right”. (meaning he lost Jackson)
5) George Patton (who beat Rommel (The Desert Fox), or a Rommel trained Panzer group, every time they opposed each other) Julius Caesar tie for fifth place
(Hitler as a General was a pimple on the @.S.S. HOLE of progress as Generals go, he was a lucky guesser at first, and then an obstacle to the defense of Germany later) I would not even mention him her except for the Hitler hugers, I see answering this question.
